Activity #2 | Attend 5 events in one week
This blog is part of my Year of Discomfort series; if you aren't familiar, you can read about it here.
I traveled for the last several years with my previous job and rarely "got out and about" when I was home. I wanted to be home when I wasn't traveling like in-my-pajama-pants, home.
First, I had to find five events that didn't interfere with my coaching calls. It wasn't easy, but I did – several were networking events, and one was completely random.
It was a group of women meeting to do a "smash something" event. It's this new way to manage stress, frustration, and get it out by cracking some stuff up with a hammer, bat, etc.
Saturday evening rolled around (the night of the Smash event), I was chilling out and enjoying watching the pups play and had no desire to get out. There wasn't a part of me that wanted to go. But I stuck to my commitment.
It was a small business hidden among massive warehouses, and I didn't even know this place existed.
I walked in and met the other women, and they were all schoolteachers. I somehow missed that this was for teachers, but no worries, they happily welcomed me and my randomness (and they loved the idea of the year of discomfort.)
We could hear some people cracking stuff in the back, and after 10 minutes or so, a woman and her two teenage daughters walked out sweating and red-faced. One had just turned 16 and wanted to smash stuff "like Khloe Kardashian did" for her birthday, so they drove 2-1/2 hours to do it. Crazy.
We had to wear overalls, a mask, and goggles. They said they'd only had one major problem, and it was when a guy decided to jump on his stuff to break it, and the glass slide right through his shoe—fun little ride to the ER for that fella.
You could grab a box of bottles for around $10-$15, or you could pick larger items that were priced individually like a computer monitor, computer tower, dishes, so many random things. I wasn't particularly stressed or needing to "get anything out," so I just went with the box of bottles.
One of the women picked a massive printer that was almost taller than her. She dropped $60 on that bad boy and went to town for a solid 45 minutes. I think she taught 3rd grade and had a rough week and let it all out. Her hands were literally shaking afterward.
I swung the bat at a few of the bottles but mostly enjoyed watching the others, the 80's music, and laughing at the printer crusher. She was in it to win it.
This was a little spot on the planet that I never would have visited if not for this little year of discomfort challenge. The most unexpected part is that I enjoyed that week. I met quite a few new people, made some new friends, and had a great time. And now, my weekly goal is to attend five events each week (used to be 1-2). How crazy is that?!
If you live in Tulsa and need to get out some frustration, or have a friend going through tough times, check it out. It's a unique experience, no doubt.
